Type A and B for automatic tool change are similar in appearance but dimensionally different. Type A is presently the most commonly used form, typically used on new machining centers and general service.

Type B provides greater flange support for heavy machining, even though type B taper shank size is smaller than type A. The A form has drive slot in the small end of the tapered shank, while B form has drive slots in the flange. Coolant through the center is featured in the A form using a coolant tube thread mount inside the shank cavity, whereas the coolant path on the B form is preferably fed through coolant ports in the flange. In many applications wrench access holes are provided through the taper as an option for manual clamping automatic tool change shanks. Both types have mounting holes for an electronic chip.

Within form A there are (8) different shank sizes ranging from 32mm (1.260) through 160mm (6.299) on the flange diameter. In form B there are (7) different shank sizes from 40mm (1.575) through 160mm (6.299) flange diameter.
